UI vs UX: what's the difference, and why both matter
A plain explanation of user interface and user experience design, and how the visual layer and task flow work together.
UI and UX describe different parts of product design. UI covers what people see and touch. UX covers the steps they follow to complete a task.
UI: how it looks
The user interface includes type, color, buttons, spacing, icons, and page layout. Its job is to make information and actions easy to recognize.
UX: how it works
User experience covers the path through the product. It asks whether people can find the right action, understand what happens next, and recover from a mistake.
Why one without the other fails
A clear visual design cannot fix a confusing process. A sensible process can also lose trust when labels, spacing, and controls change from screen to screen. Both layers must support the same task.
What good design does
Good design reduces the number of decisions a person must make. The user sees the next step, completes the task, and understands the result without needing separate instructions.
