A founder's guide to MVPs: build less, learn faster

What an MVP should test, what to leave out, and how user behavior should guide the next release.

An MVP is the smallest product that can test whether people need the main idea. It is not a reduced copy of the final product. It is a working test with one clear purpose.

What to include

Include the main action that proves the product can solve the problem. For a booking platform, that may be choosing a time, confirming the booking, and showing the result.

What to deliberately leave out

  • Features based only on assumptions
  • Admin tools that are larger than the first release needs
  • Rare cases that can be handled manually at the start
  • Visual polish that does not affect the main test

The most common mistake

A common mistake is building a smaller version of every planned feature. That creates more code without making the test clearer. The first release should do one important job well enough for people to use it.

After launch

The first release should show what people use, where they stop, and what they ask for. Use that evidence to decide the next feature instead of following the original plan without question.

Email [email protected] with the problem, target user, and main action. We can help separate the first release from the later roadmap.
